Feeding America San Diego invites you to a festive evening celebrating health and nutrition. Join us at the FASD Distribution Center on March 20 for an insider’s look at how we distribute more than 19 million meals annually, 75 percent of which is nutritious. Gather Around the Table to enjoy a delicious, family-style meal, celebrate health and nutrition efforts that are impacting our community, and raise much-needed funds as our key nutrition supporters.

−San Diego Master Gardeners Spring Seminar7:30 am – 3:30 pm
Our goal is to improve the gardening practices of San Diego County residents who grow ornamental and edible plants by providing practical information on non-commercial home horticultural and pest management related topics. Proceeds from the seminar are used to pay related expenses and to support Master Gardener public education activities.
- Each person must submit a separate registration request.
- Classes fill quickly and early registration is recommended. Seminar registration and assignment of classes is on a first come, first served basis. Confirmation of class assignments will be confirmed on the printed receipt upon payment.
- No refunds will be made after registration.
- For safety purposes, we request no children under age 12. Minors must be registered and supervised by an adult at all times.
- This is a non-smoking campus.
- Please no pets, service animals only.
- The food and beverage will be provided by: CulinArt Catering Company
- Plentiful and accessible parking is provided and is complimentary. Parking attendants will help direct Seminar attendees to the parking garage.
- Handicap parking is available in the lot near registration check in.
- We reserve the right to substitute speakers if necessary.

GENErating Healthy Eaters: An Introduction to GENE – Garden Enhanced Nutrition Education
Use your existing school garden to enhance nutrition education for children and youth and promote the consumption of fruit and vegetables. Participants will learn tools and strategies for involving children and youth in safe food handling and preparation in a garden, kitchen, or a classroom. Participants will also explore how to plan for an edible harvest and touch on Garden to Cafeteria programs.

Friday evening, April 11, 2014, Project New Village (PNV) will convene its 14th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Community Tribute and Celebration, to honor the life, lessons and legacy of an uncompromising advocate for social justice, environmentalist, consumer advocate, labor leader and farm worker.
This year’s theme is “Food Injustice: Social Consciousness Raising, Remembered, and Revisited”
The event will be hosted by the San Diego Community college District Continuing Education on the campus of Educational Cultural Complex at 4343 Ocean View Blvd. San Diego California, 5:00pm – 8:00pm.
To commemorate the of legacy of Cesar E. Chavez, Project New Village has called together civic and community leaders, activists, and food advocates to re-inspire and renew our collective interest to rebuild the “movement” for social justice. We see the struggle for food justice as an emerging civil rights platform and food security as a compelling need, especially among the most vulnerable in our society.
We believe that this “transformed movement” has to be inclusive in the spirit of the founding of the United Farm Workers (UFW). “I think that whatever nationality you are, you should be treated equally, otherwise you don’t have equality”, said Philip Vera Cruz, noted Filipino activist and co-founder, along with Larry Itliong, of the UFW.+5:00 pm14th Annual Cesar E. Our daylong excursion begins at the Tecate border crossing. We will then visit the Kumiai Community Museum. The Museum’s permanent exhibit features authentic regional artifacts and photographs depicting local culture and history. The Prehistoric Period, the Historical Period and the Contemporary Period are all represented. The Cavern of the Ancestors (designed by California artist James Hubble) explores the thousands of years of prehistoric life in the region.
Fundacion La Puerta’s Parque Del Profesor is named in honor of Edmond Szekely (co-founder of Rancho La Puerta.) The Parque, set in the foothills of Mt. Kuchumaa, is a cultural, environmental education and recreational center. Las Piedras Environmental Education Center lies within the heart of the Parque and provides a magical place where children learn to love nature. Events held at the Parque are the heart of the Fundacion’s overall vision of achieving a sustainable way of life in the Tecate region based on respect and celebration of the human and natural communities. While at the Parque, Esperanza Castro, Fundacion’s Indigenous Cultural Consultant, will lead an interpretive walk where we will learn about edible and medicinal uses of local native plants and gain an indigenous perspective of the natural landscape.
Our day concludes with dinner at El Lugar De Nos, where you will be treated to an unforgettable meal featuring local ingredients prepared by Mariela Manzano (former chef at Rancho La Puerta) and her extraordinary culinary team.

Want to learn more about bees and beekeeping? Join us for a Beekeeping Workshop Sunday April 27, 2014 at 1 pm. Don and Celeste Spangler of the San Diego Beekeeping Society will tell us about “A Year in the Life of Bees and Beekeepers,” with detailed information about the importance of honeybees, the problem of pesticides, equipment needed and honey production. All participants will receive a $25 gift certificate to use at Curds and Wine.
